The train ride home

I have traveled by car, bus, plane, metro and маршрутка, but never by train.  Because we had bikes, we boarded priority.  Because we follow instructions, we loaded our bikes and “continue to the first train car…someone will check your ticket there.”  When the car started to move and our ticket hadn’t been checked and we were the only people sitting in our car, I peeked around my chair.  The attendant was a little surprised.  We were informed that that car was closed…well, it wasn’t closed when we got on!!  We gathered are stuff and, following his instruction, followed him through a couple cars. On the way, another attendant asked me where we were going.  My answer was “to find a seat in an open car.”  That attendant seemed to think I was being smart with him…he kind of got nasty and asked me again.  So I tried to re-phrase my answer in a honey-sweet voice.  Luckily, the first attendant caught the misunderstanding that was happening and asked where we were getting off…um, Pittsburgh.

True to form, dinner plans went askew.  We had decided we wanted to have the full train experience. That means eating at the cafe car.  The man beside us had come back and told us that the credit card machine was not working.  No problem-we collected our cash and change and headed back.  About 1 1/2 train cars into our walk, an announcement was made that the cafe was closing down until that got figured out.

Granola bar dinner it is!!!  (Update-she ended up opening the cafe again to cash purchases.  A hot dog and a cheese and cracker tray in a dining train car was pretty cool.)

Pulled into Pittsburgh around 1 am.  The round trip is almost complete.  It has been a very long day!  We will be happy to sleep in tomorrow.

Anyone up for a bike trip across NY along the Erie Canal??
